About the Event
Jane Austen and Lord Byron are often thought of opposites: the country parson’s daughter and the peer of the realm; the spinster and the rake; the assiduous craftswoman and the slapdash genius. But in fact Austen and Byron had a lot in common: they used the same publisher, attended the same plays, lived near each other in London, enjoyed the same books and approached the development of Romanticism by writing in some of the same ways. In this talk, Christine Kenyon Jones (King's College London) explores their points of contact and their near-misses, and argues that Byron and Austen were – both biographically and literarily – closer than we might think.
