The Challenge:

Characters in Jane Austen’s novels frequently play games, not only to pass the time, but also to maneuver socially, assert dominance, and manipulate understanding.  Write a piece in which an Austen character or one of your own invention uses or has used playing games with others to secure a more favorable position, hide their true motives, or show their real nature.

  • Write a story, diary entry, or letter of no more than 500 words

  • Strong entries will be creative, engaging, and on topic

  • Winning entries will be published on our website
